The Construction Work Taster programme is a new initiative which aims to introduce the construction sector to 2,800 young people in Scotland through the delivery of Construction Work Taster sessions over the next three years. The programme is led by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) in partnership with the construction sector. It is funded by CITB.

Pupils from Coatbridge High School & St Ambrose High School in North Lanarkshire were excited to attend A.C. Whyte & Co. Ltd at their Head Office in Barrhead for a Construction Work Taster.

 

A.C. Whyte are currently working in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council to deliver energy efficiency and major refurbishment works which includes: roof structure strip and renewal, external wall insulation, installation of cavity wall ties, Solar PV, first floor internal refurbishment including new energy efficient windows and doors.

 

The A.C. Whyte Skills & Training Team presented an insight to the industry via their A.C. Whyte Skills Academy and the pupils undertook practical work taster sessions.

 

A.C. Whyte successfully launched their flagship Skills Academy in 2017 in partnership with West College Scotland, which is now in its fifth year. The A. C. Whyte team have created an industry led curriculum that specifically meets the needs of the business and the industry in helping deliver Scotland’s ambitious but achievable energy efficiency targets and will evolve to meet the needs of the Local Authority areas, in which the course operates.

H&S Induction and Risk Assessment

Workplace Site Visit

Pupils saw various properties at Derwent Drive, Coatbridge, with explanations of the works taking place.

A.C. Whyte has offered work placements on site for any of the 12 pupils who attended and have also advised the participants to contact them with any further questions after the taster session. The pupils were keen to collate contact details from the A.C. Whyte team, and a follow-up visit to the school is already in place.
