The Story Contracting site team recently completed a key milestone at Ravenscraig WCML Crossing, as part of a project to construct a brand new underbridge structure on behalf of Network Rail. Story Contracting contacted DYW Lanarkshire and East Dumbartonshire to advise they are offering six work placements in the fields of Civil Engineering and Construction as part of the project’s social value commitment. Specific areas include:

  • Engineering
  • Project Management
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Health & Safety
  • Site Management

Story kick-started our commitments with an industry ‘taster day’ which was held on site at Ravenscraig WCML Crossing earlier this month with a small group of students from high schools across North Lanarkshire.

 

During this session the students were able to find out what goes into constructing a brand-new bridge underneath a railway line, learn more about the rewarding careers available in the construction industry, and receive one-to-one career advice sessions from civil engineers and quantity surveyors.

 

Following this session, Story was delighted to invite the students to join the project team for a work placement to gain invaluable, hands-on experience which has been arranged in alignment with school timetables. Upon completion of their work placements, the students will take part in a CV and interview workshop to support them with future job applications. An overview of the Story graduate apprenticeship programme will also be given so that those interested in working with the company can learn more about their options.

 

The Commercial Manager Ross Dickson at Story was particularly impressed by one young person, Jay, who wishes to pursue a career in quantity surveying. Ross offered him a work placement starting in November 2022, for as long as Jay wishes, until the apprenticeship opportunities are open for application. Jay was obviously delighted with this opportunity.

Construction Work Taster Session undertaken by pupils from Our Lady’s High Cumbernauld, Braidhurst High, and St Margaret’s High, on the 8th of October 2022.

Communications & Engagement Manager, Rebecca McGraw from Story has updated DYW on the progress with the rest of the young people as of 13th October 2022:

 

“It’s been great to see CVs from some of the young people who attended the taster session coming through. We’re looking to recruit up to 6 graduate apprentice engineers in 2023, with applications likely to open in December 22 and interviews in January 23. These work experience opportunities will give them a real advantage if they choose to apply and start their careers with Story.

 

I’m very aware that every young person we’ve had on site so far has been male, and we want to make sure that we are promoting the industry to young girls too. We are now looking to undertake a site visit hosted by female engineers, health and safety, designer, and quantity surveyor personnel”
